Gov Sanford and Several State Senators Discuss the Stimulus Money

April 1st, 2009 · Jonathan Williams · 1 Comment

Yesterday, Gov. Sanford and several state senators held a press conference to discuss a new study released by the South Carolina Policy Council discussing some of the negatives to taking the federal stimulus money.

Here is the video of Ashley Landess, President of the South Carolina Policy Council, and Governor Mark Sanford discussing the new report. Sorry about having bad angles; I was off to the side and kept having to try to adjust the camera to get a good shot.

After Governor Sanford made his statements, several South Carolina State Senators also made comments. The order goes as follows: Senator Grooms, Senator Verdin, Senator Bryant, Senator Bright, and Senator Shoopman.

Here is the Press Release from the South Carolina Policy Council:

OBAMA LETTER TO SANFORD: IF YOU DO NOT APPLY FOR FEDERAL STIMULUS FUNDS, MONEY WILL NOT BE THERE

Among the numerous rumors swirling around Columbia is a report that President Barack Obama has told Gov. Mark Sanford that if he does not apply for federal stimulus funds, the money will not be available for South Carolina.

And The Palmetto Scoop has now confirmed that Obama has, in fact, sent Sanford a very blunt, personal letter saying just that.

The correspondence reportedly states that roughly $700 million in discretionary stimulus money allocated for South Carolina will be revoked on Friday if Sanford declines to accept the funds and that, by law, no alternative options can be accepted.
